School Policies

EXPECTATIONS

At Mount Pearl Senior High, students are expected to exhibit a commitment to learning and to achieving success. In addition, students are expected to be courteous and respectful at all times. The school aims to create an orderly environment in which each student realizes his or her individual potential.

BEHAVIOR

Students must learn to work individually and with others. Mutual respect, co-operation and sharing are important values in any social experience. The ability to work with and for others is an important ingredient in the learning process. It is to this end that we emphasize:

  • Respect for Self Respect for Property
  • Respect for Others Respect for Authority

Any overt behavior which would demonstrate a lack of respect of self, others, property or authority will be dealt with so that the well -being and security of everyone in the school is ensured.

ATTENDANCE

Success in school depends to a great extent on regular attendance at school. For this reason, students are expected to be in attendance at all times. If for some reason a student cannot attend class, the student is still responsible for the school work covered in that class.

There are times when a student cannot be in attendance because of illness or other valid reasons. In these cases, the reason for the absence should be explained by the parent be means of a not to the homeroom teacher or a phone call to the school.

Absenteeism from the school without a valid reason is considered a discipline problem. In such instances, the student will be subject to standard disciplinary procedures. Depending on the frequency of the incidents, these disciplinary procedures may include: student conference, parent conference, performance contracts setting conditions on student participation in school activities, school detentions and/or school suspensions.

LATENESS

Punctuality is extremely important both in school and in later life. Students should make allowances for transportation problems and emergencies and provide themselves a margin of error.

Students arriving at school after the end of the morning homeroom period must report to the main office to obtain a late slip to attend the next class. Late arrivals to homeroom period and regular classes will be closely monitored by teachers. Students who are frequently late will be subject to the standard disciplinary procedure outlines under absenteeism above.

SIGNING OUT

Whenever possible, students should avoid scheduling appointments during the school day. If, however, it is necessary to be excuses from school for an appointment, the students must sign out in the main office before leaving. A signed note from home or phone contact to a parent is necessary to sign out.

ILLNESS

Students who become sick at school must inform the office so that necessary arrangements may be made. The secretary will contact your parents and/or admit you to the Health Room. The Health Room is available for students who are unable to continue attending classes due to illness.

When students have recovered sufficiently to resume classes, they should report to the office.

SMOKING

It is the policy of the Avalon East School Board that smoking is not permitted in any building under its jurisdiction. This policy is followed and enforced at this school.

STUDENT VEHICLES

We are fortunate at Mount Pearl Senior High to be able to provide some parking spaces for out students with vehicles. Students with vehicles are required to register al vehicles at the main office during the first week of school. We also ask your cooperation in parking in only designated areas on the front parking lot or the overflow area at the rear of Mount Pearl Intermediate School next door.

At no time are students to park in fire zones, bus lanes or the roadway in the front of the school. Vehicles parked in these zones will be subject to ticketing or being towed away at the owner’s expense. Students are also expected to respect speed limits and traffic regulations while driving on school grounds. Police will be notified of driving violations.

CAFETERIA

We have a well-equipped cafeteria. Students may purchase full course meals on a daily basis at reasonable prices. Students are permitted to use the cafeteria at recess as well as at lunch time; however, they are not permitted to use the cafeteria between periods. During these times the cafeteria will be closed.

VANDALISM

Intentional destruction of school property both outside and inside the building will be taken very seriously. Appropriate legal channels will be followed.

LITTERING

Students are expected to use the proper garbage receptacles place around the school to dispose of garbage. Littering the floors, school grounds and classroom desks with garbage and food will not be tolerated.
